The Most Important Do's and Don'ts of Concrete Wall Sawing

Concrete wall sawing technique is widely used to make accurate cuts in vertical surfaces like concrete walls. It is mainly used to create openings for windows, doorway, elevators, staircases and HVAC installations.

In this concrete cutting method, a track mounted system with a diamond blade is used to make horizontal and vertical cuts in the most effective manner. And thus, it is also known as concrete track sawing technique. The equipment can briskly cut through reinforced concrete, pre-cast concrete, masonry and other materials.

If you need openings at particular angles which may not be possible with other concrete sawing methods, diamond wall sawing technique is the answer. Concrete wall saws make smooth and straight cuts, giving perfect finish to the openings which can be readily used for door, vent or window installations.

Concrete wall saws run on electrical or hydraulic power sources. According to the experts of the niche, a concrete wall saw, aka track saw, is a more versatile tool than a slab saw. You can create precise openings or cuts on any concrete structure onto which you can mount a track.

The size of the diamond blade in the concrete saw can vary depending on the depth and size of the cuts needed. In addition to concrete cutting, diamond wall saws are used in demolition projects to remove particular sections of the structure.

Here Are Some Do’s And Don’Ts Of Concrete Wall Sawing You Must Know

Do’s

  • Wear personal protective equipment like rubber boots, glasses and ear protection. In some projects, the operator may also need respirator for breathing protection.
  • Regardless of the thickness of the concrete structure, preventive safety measures need to be taken to avoid any kind of mishap on the work site.
  • Make sure the electrical wires and sources don’t come in touch with water in order to prevent electric shock or short-circuit scenarios.
  • All diamond sawing equipment need to be operated in the correct way. The operator should have essential skills and knowledge for the job.
  • Wall saw is heavy equipment and thus you will need a safe lifting method.
  • Diamond blades need to be checked thoroughly before use.
  • Check all bolts and screws daily before the sawing operation to ensure all the parts of the equipment are tightly connected
  • Make sure the set up is done properly before you begin with the cutting operation.
  • Remember, the larger is your diamond blade, the slower you should move it.
  • The pulleys need to be inspected for excessive wear and v-belt needs to be tensioned properly.
  • Ensure continuous flow of water to both sides of the diamond cutting blade.
  • Follow the guidelines shared in the manufacturer’s operating manual to choose right blade diameter, determine operating speed, etc.

Don’ts

  • Don’t use a diamond blade that as any kind of damage or missing segments. Ensure if the blade is sharp enough and the blade guard is in its place.
  • Don’t perform concrete sawing using a diesel or gasoline powered equipment in area that lacks ventilation
  • Don’t make a deep cut in first pass. Begin concrete cutting with an up-cut.
  • Don’t overlook the importance of selecting right diamond blade for the material to be cut. A wrong selection of blade can lead to significant damage to the blade or machine and also create an unsafe site condition.
  • Don’t choose dry concrete cutting method with blades that are exclusively recommended to be used in wet concrete cutting operations.
  • Don’t operate the wall saw equipment with a damaged or broken blade guard.
